Intent:

At Warbstow, we want to  inspire all pupils to lead physically active lives. We aim to maximise the development of every child’s ability and achievement in the area of PE enabling them to know more about physical activity and how it is a key component of a healthy lifestyle.  We believe that this should feed into an understanding of the benefits of activity and exercise upon healthy bodies, lifestyles and minds which children will continue into their adult life.

 

Through sports, children will learn the skills of resilience, respect, teamwork and sportsmanship,  at Warbstow we value all of these vital principles in all aspects of school life.

 

Our curriculum for PE aims to ensure that all pupils progress in a number of developmental areas: physical development, social and emotional development, and cognitive development.

 

Physical development

  • To develop physical competence and confidence by acquiring and developing a range of fine and gross motor skills.
  • To develop knowledge, skills and understanding, and the ability to remember, repeat and refine action with increasing control and accuracy.
  • To promote fitness and healthy lifestyle by understanding the effects of exercise on the body and mind and the importance of developing strength, endurance, and flexibility.
  • To appreciate the value of exercising

Social and emotional development

  • To develop a love of physical exercise
  • To develop the ability to work within a group- communicate and respond appropriately towards others.
  • To develop confidence in their own skills and abilities
  • To realise that the right exercise can be fun and give them energy.
  • To develop a sense of fair play
  • To develop an understanding of competition and how to engage in competitive games.

Cognitive development

  • To develop decision making and problem-solving skills
  • To develop reasoning skills and the ability to make judgements
  • To develop an increasing ability to select, link and apply skills, tactics and compositional ideas.
  • To understand that using the correct technique will improve accuracy and individual performance
  • To be able to evaluate performance.

Our curriculum is ambitious and designed to give all pupils, particularly children with SEND the knowledge they need to succeed in life.  Learning is adapted to be ambitious yet allows children to develop their knowledge, skills and abilities to apply what they know and can do with increasing fluency and independence.  Universal Provision strategies are implemented to scaffold and support learning. 

 

Implementation

At Warbstow, we believe that each child should be given as many opportunities as possible to enhance their basic skills in PE and become healthier and more physically active.  We regularly utilise our outdoor facilities taking part in the Daily Mile, physically active playtimes, use of a variety of play equipment.

 

Children are taught in high-quality PE sessions every week during curriculum time and also have access to weekly extra-curricular sports. We work closely with our local sports partnerships to provide the children and teachers throughout the school with the appropriate skills for the teaching and learning of PE.

 

Children at Warbstow are given wider opportunities to build character and embed values through regular teamwork activities. They are consciously involved in competitive sport through competitions and thoroughly enjoy participating in various sports, giving all involved a sense of achievement.

 

A variety of assessment approaches are used from observations, marking, white board ‘show me’ and informal assessments.  This informs future planning, ensures any misconceptions are responded to and sets the pace of learning appropriately. 

 

Early Years

Physical Development is vital in children, enabling them to pursue happy, healthy, active lives. Gross and fine motor experiences are developed through sensory explorations, focussing on strength, co-ordination and positional awareness. We provide opportunities for play both indoors and outdoors, which supports our children in building core strength, stability, balance, spatial awareness, co-ordination and agility.

Key Stage One and Two

We ensure that sufficient time is given to PE, in order to enable pupils to meet the expectations set out in the National Curriculum programme of study. The PE curriculum is coherent and shows progression, allowing time for children to develop and build on their skills in physical development.

Areas of PE development are swimming, games, gymnastics, dance, athletics, teamwork, performing, and appraising.

 

Impact:

We believe that all children, irrespective of physical ability, race, gender or stage of achievement have the right to reach their full potential in PE and achieve enjoyment, satisfaction and success at their own level. This will be achieved by:

  • Children becoming stewards of their own learning and support peers to continue and excel.
  • Children showing pride for our school and continue to compete competitively.
  • Children exploring and are engaged by a wide range of sport.
  • Children becoming more active and continuing to do so into adulthood.
  • All children developing a passion, enthusiasm and drive for Physical Education.
